Ref: BH-20131203-41836-CHN Situation Update No. 16 On 2014-01-30 at 11:40:25 [UTC] Event: Biological Hazard Location: China Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Hong Kong Situation The Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) announced today the fourth human case of H7N9 avian influenza (AI) in a 75-year-old man, according to a CHP press release Jan. 29. The details of the case are the elderly Tin Shui Wai resident initially presented with symptoms of cough with sputum Sunday. He later went to the Emergency Department of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) last night with fever and shortness of breath where he passed away early this morning. Click this link for more details on this case from the hospital. Laboratory analysis by the CHP???s Public Health Laboratory Services Branch confirmed the virus in a nasopharyngeal sample. His travel history is being investigated and his close contacts have been asymptomatic to date. The CHP also reported on eight additional laboratory confirmed H7N9 AI cases from mainland China. These include four new cases from Zhejiang, three from Guangdong and one from Jiangsu. All are currently hospitalized for their illnesses. According to the CHP, this brings the total cases from the mainland to 254.
