“Reflection Paper” Last week, we discussed about the different kinds of eras, the Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic Eras. We are divided into three groups to perform about our respective eras. We have to say something about our chosen era or period. Each day, we learned something about this. We shared different ideas with each other and also, learn from it. Each group made a very creative and entertaining presentation that made us including Sir Ton-Ton happy. The said presentation helped us to discuss the lesson lively and it gave us advance learning before sir ton-ton started the discussion. Last Friday, which is also last week, sir gave us an assignment to make about an article in The Magazine called The New Yorker.”How the Paleolithic Diet Got Trendy” article talks about diet, obviously. According to Wikipedia, the Paleolithic diet, also popularly referred to as the caveman diet, Stone Age diet and hunter-gatherer diet, is a modern nutritional plan based on the presumed ancient diet of wild plants and animals that various hominid species habitually consumed during the Paleolithic era. The diet is based on several premises, one of which is that human ancestors evolved for thousands of years and became well-adapted to foods of the Paleolithic era. Advocates argue that food cultivation and preparation greatly declined in quality about 10,000 years ago, with the advent of agriculture and domestication of animal sand that humans have not evolved to properly digest new foods such as grain, legumes, and dairy, much less the highly-processed and high-calorie processed foods that are so readily available and cheap, and this has led to modern-day problems such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Advocates claim that followers of the diet may enjoy a longer, healthier, more active life. Critics of the diet point out that humans are much more adaptable than previously thought, that the hypothesis that they are genetically adapted to the Paleolithic environment is flawed, that it is in any case practically impossible for humans to know how their ancestors ate. Nutritionists have pointed out that the diet may be less effective than other popular diets in promoting good health. The Paleolithic diet has lower energy density than the typical diet consumed by modern humans This is especially true in primarily plant-based/vegetarian versions of the diet, but it still holds if substantial amounts of meat are included. For example, most fruits and berries contain 0.4–0.8 calories per gram, and vegetables can be even lower than that (cucumbers contain only 0.16 calories per gram). Game meat, such as cooked wild rabbit, is more energy-dense (up to 1.7 calories per gram), but it does not constitute the bulk of the diet by mass or volume at the recommended plant/animal ratios, and it does not reach the caloric densities of many processed foods commonly consumed by modern humans: most McDonalds sandwiches such as the Big Mac average 9 calories per gram, since there is a high fat content and fat yields 9 cal/gram and sweets such as cookies and chocolate bars commonly exceed 4 calories per gram. Diets with a low caloric density tend to provide a greater feeling of satiety at the same energy intake, and they have been shown effective at achieving weight loss in overweight individuals without explicit caloric restrictions. Even some authors who may appear otherwise critical of the Paleolithic diet have argued that the high energy density of modern diets, as compared to ancestral or primate diets, contributes to the incidence of diseases of affluence in the industrial world.Elizabeth Kolbert said in the article that agriculture was invented on different parts of the world. The first was in Turkey about ten thousand years ago. The crop was a big hit and spread rapidly. It means that Agriculture has been the source of food not only but the people now adays but also by our ancestors many years ago. Many of them eat different kinds of food like we do not usually eat. Early farmers were not just shorter that hunter-gatherers, they were also more sickly. Most of them suffered on different diseases like measles and crowd epidemic diseases because they don’t get proper nutrients they needed. More people are affected because the disease jumped from one person to another to another until many of them are almost suffering and running for their lives. But despite all of this, for me, still, Paleolithic diet is good for us you know? Maybe they just don’t eat or they are not really familiar and used to eat and undergo on a diet. Paleolithic diet is about mimicking the effect of such diet on a metabolism with the food available in the supermarket. Like what? Maybe like meat, grains and such .I don’t really understand about this kind of diet. But many people uses this diet to lose weight and keep their body fit. Fruits, vegetables, meat and organ meats, and seafood, which are staples of the forager diet, are more micronutrient-dense than refined sugars, grains, vegetable oils, and dairy products in relation to digestible energy. Consequently, the vitamin and mineral content of Paleolithic diet is very high compared with a standard diet, in many cases a multiple of the RDA. Fish and seafood represent a particularly rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and other micronutrients, such as iodine, iron, zinc, copper, and selenium, that are crucial for proper brain function and development. Foods now adays are perfectly different compared to the foods or ancestors had. Many foods exist in our time don’t bring any nutrients, well I’m not saying all, but many. Some of them only bring cholesterol and factors that can make our body temporarily experience weakness and no energy doing things and stuff. But when this is compared to Paleolithic diet, there is a big difference of the two. There are many good effects Paleolithic diet could give us. No wonder why our ancestors live in this world and exist for a very long time. So why don’t we try this kind of diet. Maybe it can help us to make our body more physically fit and make our minds mentally alert in school. It’s your choice if you want it. Being in a diet is not always giving us the best result we would want but at least maybe not perfectly, gave us the confidence and face everyone what we’ve got undergoing in a diet. Let’s make a move to a bright future. Start with yourself, body and mind. Maybe this diet could help you.;) Elyzah ParconDyle Lentija, Aira Claire Caballero , Fern MacarimbangVanessa Ramirez DuaJuan Carlos M.
