Reflection_Carina On 8th of September, ‘Project TETRIS-filed’ started the event at the railway tunnel next to the Strathfield train station. The main idea of the project is to establish the awareness of the pedestrian safety in any area with bad traffic system and promote safer infrastructure system with concerning about road safety. The event successfully finished with 145 participants. Lighting installation attacked people to come to the event and chatted with the team. People sign and decorate the Tetris blocks to show their supports. From the survey in the beginning of the project, it shows that the low light level and poor sanitary environment in the tunnel is the major factor affects people to go to the train station via crossing the roundabout instead of the tunnel. At the same time, the original sign of pedestrian crossing is inconspicuous, which cannot drag people’s attention. Inspired by the BJ Fogg’s behavior model: motivation, ability and trigger, the event set up its own behavior model. Motivation • Lighting installation made the tunnel bright and colorful. Compared with the dark and dirty tunnel it used to be, the well-decorated tunnel looks more welcome and safe to cross. • People in the event were educated the importance of pedestrian crossing. • Posters promoted the road safety to everyone who came to the event. • Free food and drinks provided in the tunnel awarded pedestrians who choose to cross the tunnel to the train station. • The team members dressed with team uniform, which look professional and confident. Acting as road safety promoter, we stand next to the roundabout and stopped every pedestrians who were trying to cross the road via it. Ability • As tunnel is the second path to train station. • The tunnel is clean and safe for pedestrians to cross. • People can access the tunnel without any traffic crossing. Trigger • The tunnel is clean and well decorated, and there is free food, drinks and games inside on event. Setting the event in the tunnel is very effective to establish the awareness of the right way to the train station on the spot. Team uniform makes the action professional and convincible. Free awards and games make the action and education of the road safety fun and friendly. Lighting installation is the best part of the project and all the people in that community loves it. The time limitation of the preparation for event limits its scope. Lacking of time to get the permission from the local council, we lost the chance to leave the light installation and posters on the spot. We also lost the chance to see the effects after the event. The event is successful, because it was well researched before the action and it processed based on the right strategy. A good research is important and necessary for an advocate to starts a project. A good strategy is an insurance for the project to ensure its succeed. As an advocate for the ‘project TETRIS-field’, I can see how popular and successful the light installation was in the event. People came to tunnel for the colorful lights. The art effect gives people a reason to join the event and it also give us an opportunity to chat with pedestrians. In the future, Project TETRIS-field will focus on involving more art works with the issued site, and we might work together with some artists to help them to exhibit the art works on the issued site to attract more pedestrians to it and using the proposed crossing path.
