Reflections of Kitchen Camp Day 1 and 2: The first shopping - TopicsExpress

Reflections of Kitchen Camp Day 1 and 2: The first shopping trip revealed the squeeze they felt in this project. Right away, many cuts were made in our usual diet like COFFEE, TEA (yep, thats right...but were hanging in there...) organic foods, diversity of foods, and less fruit. They simply couldnt afford it they thought. But we are having lots of hot cocoa! Also, there has been a lot more focus by my kids on not wasting even the smallest portions (a big change). And they are serving smaller portions than we usually eat. Its been nice to be a bit hungry now and then, actually. With their fear of running out of food or tasty food before the week is over, there has been a lot more discussion about how to make the food they already bought last longer and taste better. They can do this by using more freebies- whats already growing in our yard and eggs from the chickens. It isnt a whole lot but it should help. Both my girls, but especially my younger one have some kitchen experience so preparing the food hasnt been so challenging. Cleaning up on the other hand... Im no perfect cleaner upper but I usually dont leave dinner dishes and crumbs on the table when I serve breakfast. :/. Weve got some work to do in this area. Im really realizing my kids like things differently than I do. Theyre serving more American food, their scrambled eggs have lots of black pepper or herbs and even fresh tomato (better than mine actually), and they really like hot chocolate. How would I have known these beautiful preferences if I hadnt given them the opportunity to reveal them?
