Reflections on Anicca: About 10 years ago as I was a novice monk in a forest monastery, I discussed the basis of existence with another monk. One of the concept that completely changed the way I see the world was anicca - that all things are impermanent. But our minds are cloaked by ignorance, which obstructs us from seeing the truth. What we see instead is an illusion of reality - that some things may be permanent. Upon its loss, we face dissatisfaction and suffering. During our conversation, he told me a story of a friend who while stitching his robes... the needle broke. As soon as that happened he exclaimed oh! anicca. Obviously he was not misled by the mind to blame the maker or whoever used it before him, or to be sad that something he needed had just broke... instead he saw reality as it was: that everything is impermanent.
