“Reform not abolition of traditional practices”, says Minister Dukuly Internal Affairs Minister Morris M. Dukuly says the reform agenda of Liberian culture and traditions is not intended to abolish any tradition of the country. He says the Ministry’s agenda is to reform and modernize cultural and traditional practices to conform to contemporary realities. According to a Ministry of Internal Affairs release, Minister Dukuly assures commitment to working with all traditional leaders including; Chiefs, Zoes, Elders and Tribal Governors throughout the length and breadth of the country to achieve the reform agenda of the Ministry. The release quotes Minister Dukuly as saying, “The process will comprise nationwide consultations with traditional leaders on how to address future challenges of Liberian culture as well as involvement of rural dwellers in implementation of programs of the Ministry.” Hon. Dukuly was speaking Monday at a meeting with members of the newly constituted Advisory Council of Chiefs, Zoes, Elders and Tribal Governors of Liberia, held at the Ministry on Capitol Hill. The Internal Affairs Minister told the traditional leaders at the gathering that his administration will have no preference over certainly groups in all aspects of the reform process, but will require the full cooperation of all. He promised to work with all traditional leaders across the country with an aim to achieving his dreams in line with the mandate of the Ministry. Meanwhile, traditional leaders have lauded Minister Dukuly for constituting an Advisory Council to advise the Ministry on cultural and traditional matters. The Chairman of the Council, River Gee County Paramount Chief James Pah-Saye, said they were particularly pleased with the composition of the council which involves all major sectors of Liberian culture and tradition including Chiefs, Elders, Zoes and Tribal Governors. Also speaking, the Co-Chair and long-serving female culture leader Mama Sieh Tomah said the involvement of traditional people in the activities of the Ministry will restore pride and dignity to Liberian culture. Mama Tomah said her team will work together with the Ministry to promote peace and development throughout Liberia. At the same time, Assistant Internal Affairs Minister for Customs and Culture, Hon. Joseph B. Jangar pledged the fullest support of traditional people nationwide and promised to engage them through consultations to ensure peace.
