Regarding road closures, from Daily News reporter Kari Barlow: Okaloosa County Public Works Director John Hofstad said ice from the winter storm was worse than hed expected. Its virtually every road, he said. Its progressively worse the farther you go. He said his department doesnt have enough sand to spread to make a difference. Right now I dont have a plan other than to wait for the sun to melt some of this ice, he said. The best were looking at is 33 or 34 degrees, and I dont know if thats enough to melt the ice were seeing. Hofstad said he has only a skeleton crew of employees assessing roads this morning because of the hazardous conditions. He traveled from Fort Walton Beach to Crestview earlier today and saw multiple overturned cars along Lewis Turner Boulevard and State Road 85. He said the Shoal River bridge had sand on it but was heavily iced. Our advice is to consider the roads closed, he said. We dont have roads closed by barricades simply because its too dangerous to put people out there to set them up.
