Regarding the description of Brushy School. There was a vestibule - TopicsExpress

Regarding the description of Brushy School. There was a vestibule on the front of the building. It must have been built after Dad went there. We kept our coats and galoshes as well as our dinner buckets there. (I guess that they would be called lunch boxes today.) The swing set and the well was on the left front of the lot (looking toward the building). We carried water from the well in a bucket to set on a small sink at the front corner of the main room. As I remember we all drank from a single ladle. There was a coal furnace at the rear of the main room. The garage and coal shed combined was located at the left front of the property. There was a dividing wall that separated the garage and coal storage area. A closely guarded secret was that the wall did not extend to the roof and there was just enough room to climb up the inside garage wall and through the opening to a small loft above the coal. There were two outhouses located at opposite corners of the back of the property, boys on the left and girls on the right. I remember well playing Fox and Geese in the winter. In the spring and fall we played ball in the same cow pasture north of the building where we played fox and geese in the winter. There was always the risk of stepping in a cow patty while playing ball. Two other games I remember were andy over (or was it annie over?) and red rover, red rover. There was a ditch beyond the back fence. When there was a heavy rain the ditch would fill with water and in spite of the teacher forbidding us to do so, we raced our boats (actually sticks) in the rapidly running water. Some of the older boys would jump over the ditch, I still remember being taunted for not attempting the jump. I think that I made a good decision because I might not have made it to remember fondly the great days at Brushy. Leslie, thank you so much for your inspiring me to remember the wonderful Brushy School days. They were truly the good old days.
