Register of Electors Main Body Text Who can Register ◾You can only apply to have your name added to the register if you are: ◾18 (or will become 18 during the life of the register ◾a British, Irish, Commonwealth or European Union Member State Citizen ◾resident within the Leeds City Council area. ◾a British citizen living abroad (as long as you were registered in th UK within the last 15 years) How to Register If you are a British, Irish, Commonweath or EU citizen, are 18 years of age (or will become 18 during the life of the register) and live within the Leeds City Council area you can complete the voter registration form. If you are a British citizen living abroad you must complete the Register - Overseas Electors form. The deadlines and when your details will appear on the register is contained within the voter registration form. European Union Member State Citizens If you are a citizen of one of the European Union countries you can register of vote in the UK at a European Parliamentary election. Elections to the European Parliament take place every five years. The next election is scheduled for 22 May 2014. A European Parliament voter registration form is available to download from this page. By completing this form you are registering to vote in the UK and not your home country. If you intend to vote in your home country do not complete this form. The Register of Electors - Your Choice There are two versions of the register of electors - the full register and the edited register. The full register is used only for elections, preventing and detecting crime and checking applications for credit. The recipients of the full register are clearly set out in law and may only use the information in the register of electors for the purposes specified by the Representation of the People (England and Wales) Regulations 2001. The edited register can be bought by anyone, and they may use it for any purpose, including commercial activities such as mail out marketing. Opting out of the edited Register of Electors You can choose to have your name and address removed from the edited register. Please put a tick on the form against your name on the registration form. This means your details cannot be used for marketing purposes. It is a criminal offence for it to be used for any other purpose. You may at any time, request to opt out by making a declaration to the Electoral Registration Officer that you require him as the data controller to cease, or not begin, prcessing for the purposes of direct marketing your personal data in accordance with section 11 of the Data Protection Act 1998. Any such declaration must be made by each individual as follows: ◾by email to [email protected] and you must make it clear that you wish to make the declaration to opt out under section 11 of the Data Protection Act 1998 and include your full name and address ◾in writing to the Electoral Registration Officer, Level 2, The Town Hall, The Headrow, LS1 3AD. You must make it clear that you wish to make the declaration to opt out under section 11 of the Data Protection Act 1998 and include your full name and address and each person sign and date the application The Register of Electors and Credit Reference Agencies The register of electors is produced for the purpose of voting in elections and referendums. The law allows only legally registered credit reference agencies to purchase a copy of the register to help with their fraud checking. These credit reference agencies cannot pass on details of those electors who have opted out of the edited register.
