Rehire Yourself Every Day! I believe one of the reasons that people don’t reach the level of success they desire in our profession is the lack of accountability. If you’re accustomed to someone else holding you accountable for your performance … as most new Consultants are … you may feel a little lost without that support, lost enough to avoid the actions that are in your best interest to take. For example, your Sponsor is not your boss and therefore can’t make you do anything. And since you are not an employee, no one directs you to perform certain tasks to keep your job. So where can you find the accountability you need to achieve? It must come from within. You must provide it with desire, discipline and activity. And yes, this is easier said than done. Since most Consultants work their business in precious part-time hours, how can you ignite the desire, discipline and activity to take action? One proven way is to rehire yourself every day. Here is the premise. Pretend that there are two of you and that one is the ”boss” and the other is the “employee. ” Now, with your boss hat on … evaluate the activity and productivity of your employee self over the past week, two weeks or thirty days. Be compassionate, yet honest as you evaluate your actions, decisions and results. Now, with the boss hat still on, decide whether or not your employee deserves a raise, a warning letter or a note of dismissal. In other words, would you give yourself a promotion or fire yourself? If you are willing to be honest with yourself … this exercise can be very effective in creating clarity on whether or not you are truly in action … or if you are suffering from a lethal case of denial. You may wonder whether your boss self is really experienced enough, really knows enough to evaluate your employee self accurately and fairly. If so, let me point out that at the beginning, your boss self needs to evaluate only one thing. If you truly desire to build a successful Direct Selling business, then the #1 activity to master is talking to new people every day! Last year I enjoyed the privilege to interview a leader who had recently promoted to the top of her pay plan. When asked what caused her increase in pace and productivity, she said, “Leslie, I was convinced I was talking to enough people, until I actually started talking to enough people.” There is no magic bullet in our profession. But if there were … that would be it! So keep track of how many new people you talk to each week. This one measure will give your boss self the basis for a fair and effective evaluation. Have the courage to rehire yourself every day, and soon your “job promotions” will be in title based on your pay plan and your “salary raises” will come in an ever-increasing monthly check.
