Reigning International Power and Groovy Soca Monarch Machel Montano donned his kurta (traditional Indian wear) to bring a mixed repertoire of music and songs for his fans at the car park of the Regent Star Hotel, Piarco, on Saturday night. Machel blended his voice with chutney diva Drupatie Ramgoonai and Former Chutney Soca Monarch KI Persad for a concert that was laced with a Bollywood flavour. This show titled, ‘I Am KI’ was produced by the music director of the band JMC 3Veni, Vereendra Persad (KI’s father). Former Digicel Rising star Neval Chaitlal shared the stage with KI and Montano to bring a highly charged performance with Bollywood dance moves and special effects. Machel and Drupatie brought sweet melody and rhythm to the concert when they joined voices for their mega hit songs ‘Wapan Jayaa’ and ‘Indian Gyul’. Machel burst on stage to the sound of loud drumming, starting his stint with soca, he then brought on Drupatie who started her Bollywood dance and song and the reigning Soca Monarch joined in as he waved his hands and moved his feet to the music much to the delight of the people. KI did not disappoint the audience with his selection of hits, “Single Forever” and “Friends for the Night”. The concert featured KI’s full band, 3Veni. Radio announcer and recording star Anil Bheem joined voices with his daughter Pritvi Bheem to entertain fans and Chutney finalist Saleem “Malik” Beharry had the crowd screaming when he did his hit selection “Chupkay Chupkay”. Other artistes to perform included Olatunji Yearwood, and Cassi. KI’s father and manager Veerendra Persad, also a member of the 3Veni outfit, said he was happy with the show. “This is our way of offering the public the perfect combination of music and song,” he said, adding that in TT there was a mix audience that enjoy both chutney and soca and he was happy to bring these top acts on one stage for the people who have supported the music.
