Released on 31 March 1996 this Michael Jackson song was accompanied by two music videos directed by Spike Lee. The first was shot in two locations in Brazil. When you see Olodum (percussion musical group), the footage was shot in the Pelourinho, the historic city center of Salvador, Bahia. When you see scenes with mountains and water in the background, filming occurred in the Santa Marta favela of Rio de Janeiro where the Brazilian authorities had tried to ban all production over fears the video would damage their image and prospects of Rio de Janeiro staging the 2004 Olympics. However, the risk of a backlash for refusing such popular a musician and film maker forced them to permit the video to be made. Founded in 1979 as a grass roots consciousness, cultural, empowerment organization targeting youth Olodums stated aims are to combat racism to encourage self-esteem and pride among Afro Brazilians, and to fight for civil rights. Olodum is also credited with inventing samba reggae.- Prof. Dunkel
