Releasing balloons is the equivalent of throwing your dangerous-to-the-environment trash directly on the ground... (they have to come down sometime and somewhere) the balloons find their way into nature and are hazardous and life-threatening to the various wildlife that comes in contact with it. There are other ways to commemorate those important things in your life, such as remembering a loved one, than littering.
