Religion And Politics, The Osun Example By Simon Utsu - TopicsExpress

Religion And Politics, The Osun Example By Simon Utsu Aregbesolas desperate attempt to turn Osun state which hitherto was a secular state to an Islamic state is unacceptable. Theyve been stories of the Governor trying to unsettle pupils and students with new sets of rules which underline his true ambition. It is often said that a picture speaks a thousand words. Recently, I saw a campaign billboard of Aregbesola with the insignia of Islam inscribed boldly on it. Sincerely speaking, I wonder what a religious symbol should be doing on an election poster/billboard. The immediate past Governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi is a staunch catholic, in fact his only two siblings are clergies; his brother is a Roman Catholic priest and his sister is a Reverend Sister. I cant recollect hearing of or seeing him use the images of the Holy Rosary or the scapula in any of his campaign billboards. The national body of the APC party has refused to call him to order on this disturbing antics. Doesnt this clearly serve as a pointer as to the direction in which the APC is moving? This is another subtle sign that has revealed to us further their long term plan which is to Islamize Nigeria. I think politics should be void of religion and religious sentiments. 90% of their recently held Abuja National convention(which was telecast live on the NTA) was anchored in the hausa language. Turkey is a predominantly Muslim nation but it strives as much as possible to maintain its secularism. Whenever any government tries to default from this norm, their autonomous Military steps in and puts that government in check. This has helped keep Turkey from experiencing the sectarian and extreme insurgencies prevalent or common to their Arab neighbors viz Iraq and Syria. It has also helped to preserve the legacy of the great Mustafa Ataturk. I think the people of Osun should kick Aregbesolas government out come August this year. Gov Aregbesola has thrived in using religious propaganda to divide his people thus far; this can never move the State of Osun and by extension Nigeria in the desired direction. The APC should go back to the drawing board and address such issues so their longevity can be guaranteed. Else, well continue to stick to the PDP till the better alternative comes. skytrendnews/index.php/viewpoint/opinion/2467-religion-and-politics-the-osun-example-by-simon-utsu
