These were not largely needed skills outside of the Roman Army. All of these Men needed to be controlled and Religion and its Laws in Canon were imposed upon the people by consent. Back then Solders were paid in salt, this is because GOLD was in short supply. The term salary is derived from salt. Thus, be the salt of the earth. To Various degrees Pagan & Christian thought were merged into modern Christianity. Constantine was largely responsible for Merging the two Thoughts because of taxation purposes. The reality is ALL religion since the dawn of civilization has had the purpose of controlling others. In reality, the first forms of Government were self-anointed Kings, Gods or Deities. Every few years a New Army or Tribe conquered the area / region and new self-anointed Kings, Gods or Deities were imposed. This largely happened in the Middle-east or Mesopotamia. All Religion requires you to Believe in something despite all of the scientific evidence. This is believing in a fairy-tale. As society has evolved and so have these Religions. Further, the Religions were also responsible for most Law we know today. Today we operate in Civil Commercial Code for numerous reasons, but they originate in Religion. All Religion is BS. Its caused more harm than good. More wars have been fought over imaginary BS because people still choose to Believe instead of think for themselves. Religion has STOPPED natural selection in humans.
