Remaining in an abusive and controlling environment can have long lasting psychological effects on the victim especially if the abuser has created an environment that makes the victim feel trapped, hopeless, and helpless. The abuser will often times prevent any type of professional development, obtainment of job skills or even allow their victim to seek an education. They will even go so far as to isolate their victim from family and friends. That way, the victim is completely and totally dependent on the abuser. Victims often feel trapped in a certain lifestyle due to the years of power, control and abuse they have endured. Effective counseling and community support systems can help break that cycle.
