Remember how short my time is; For what futility have You created - TopicsExpress

Remember how short my time is; For what futility have You created all the children of men? Psalm 89:47 Someone has asked me to talk about heartbreak for this particular devo. So as I was considering what I might say, and what I feel God would say this seemed to just fall into my hands. I was talking to my brother last night. Probably most people know I grew up in a divorced home. My parents split up when I was around 2 years old. They got back together and divorced again when I was around a kindergartner. I can’t pretend my life was worse than so many people. To many people my life would be a cake walk. But as I walk through the past of my life it is surrounded by heart break and hurt. Broken homes are not places where kids thrive or feel loved. For you who have been there, you will immediately understand. I get the pleasure of being a youth minister- to talk to countless students whom are crying out in their broken hearts. They are struggling in their lives with the hand God has allowed them to go through. I struggle when I hear the horror stories. This is the hardest thing in my job to listen to. They bring me back to what I for all my life wanted to get away from. I would and still do tell them there’s hope. Someday you’ll leave that place, and you’ll have a chance to change your life to do it a different way. Problem is that’s not entirely true. As you leave and turn 18- you carry with you for all your life the hurts and pains of your start in life. You can mask it, and you can even kick those people whove hurt you most out of your life. But it doesnt change they are still there, and can continue to hurt you. People will tell you to forgive, but you’ll find that is not a one day event. It’s a constant miracle that never stops happening. Truth in all this, as you give your life to Jesus- the world continues to hurt you. Life continues to be hard, and you will always struggle in others sins and your own. Truth is what following Jesus does is give you a peace that someday he will set everything right. It gives you a peace in your soul to know someone has seen everything youve been through, and he cares about your hurt. He is the only one who can keep us safe in our heart breaks. The future, the new open door you need as someone crushes you is Jesus. He is the open door. He is the only one who will never let us down. Our parents will let us down. Our spouses and significant others will let us down. Our children will let us down. Our families will let us down. Jesus cannot and will not. It may seem right now like he is, and like he hasnt protected you. But the fact that you’re reading this shows, he is speaking to you- and would never leave you in your brokenness of heart. Truth is following Christ doesnt make life easier. It doesnt make you exempt from being hurt and hated and receiving a heart that’s been trampled on (or that will be.) Following Christ gives you a friend and a father who understands. A Spirit that can find comfort in the most difficult times, and a promise that this life is short and the next step is not. Life is but a breath. Eternity isnt. This life does have significant meaning, but it is not all there is. In light of that maybe heartbreak makes a just a little more sense.
