Remember when public policies at least pretended to be about people? Now its a blatant special interest profit battle all the way. For those of you interested in the effects of Citizens United and big money in politics: there is an epic showdown looming between Sheldon Adelson (owner of the Venetian and the Palazzo on the Las Vegas Strip plus elaborate casinos in Macau and Singapore) and his on-line gambling rivals. Adelson is pouring millions and millions into lobbying efforts to shut down on-line gambling, but theres a powerful counter lobby ready to fight his efforts. Adelson is best known for spending nearly $100 million in 2012 to help Republican candidates. He almost single-handedly kept Newt Gingrich alive in the GOP primaries and poured millions into congressional race ads.
