Remembering Cyrus Radford, Jr, Married, wife Barbara, a new infant son, he was one of the nine killed in that horrible disaster at the Mount Resaca O, P, April 4, 1946, when the Observation Post was accidentally bombed. That baby originally had a name that was changed after his fathers death to Cyrus Radford III - A few years ago I located the son, called him and he was grateful that the Island remembered his father. Benjamin Perez wrote a moving story about the accident - I will post it later. The Culebrenses were literally in tears over the incident and helped the evacuation. I am friends with Cyrus III on Facebook, I am going to forward Benjis story to him, with a personal note from Benji. Cyrus III is now about 68 yrs old. Lietenant Commander Cyrus S Radford, Jr. a 1940 Naval Academy was the Son of a Brig. General Cyrus Radford Sr. Quartermaster of the Marine Corps and Founder of the Admiral Farragut Academy, a prestigious prep school whose graduates include Rear Admiral/Astronaut Alan Shepard, first American in space; Singer Actor Eduardo Andonie; Lorenzo Lamas; and Stephen Stills of Crosby Stills and Nash. “Whether you want a fourth in bridge, a game of golf, stock market news,a ketch cleaned, or a radio modernized, he is the man you are looking for.” (quote from Naval Academy friend) It is ironic that a young man with such a grand military history will be remembered by Culebra, his data at Arlington Cemetery were he was buried simply says Commander Radford served in World War II and died on 4 April 1946.
