Remembering NOEL REDDING! (RIP) born David Noel Redding - Folkestone, Kent, England (25 December 1945 – 11 May 2003) Bassist / guitarist, vocalist, songwriter: The Lonely Ones, The Loving Kind, The JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE, Fat Mattress, Road, Noel Redding Band, Mountain. Redding switched from guitar to bass on joining the Jimi Hendrix Experience. He arrived thinking he was auditioning for the guitar spot in the New Animals. He was the first person to join the Experience, and the first to leave. His final concert with them was in June 1969. While still in the Experience, he formed Fat Mattress (as guitarist) as a creative release. Fat Mattress opened for the Experience with Noel playing a double set nightly. Noel later formed the excellent 3 piece band Road with Rare Earths Rod Richards. Redding was found dead in his home in Clonakilty on 11 May 2003. A post mortem concluded that Redding died from shock haemorrhage due to oesophageal varices in reaction to cirrhosis of the liver. He was 57 years old.
