Remembering Shammi Kapoor on His Death Anniversary 14 Aug 14 When he died on this day three years ago, I was seriously ill in the Navy hospital at Mumbai INHS Asvini (Thats when I wrote, on my blog, what I think is my most humorous post: Sleep And I, Lovers Once, Strangers Now) And I immediately thought of how I would like to remember him. Would I remember him as a brat who dared to portray himself as a rich and spoiled kid during thise days when depicting poverty made producers laugh all the way to the bank? Would I remember him as a dancing, flirting, flitting boy who tried to ape Elvis but ultimately had a style of his own? Would I remember him as a man who was never shy ir awkward with the modernity in Hindi cinema acting? Yes, I would remember him as all that, I thought to myself. But, lying on the hospital bed I knew that I would also remember him as Pagla Kahin Ka. The name if thus 1970 movie describes him to a grear extent! I consider this as the most challenging role that he did. The role itself proved that a man considered to be crazy was much better than the duplicity that he had to deal with in the society; including in love. The song from the movie would always remain with me as the song to remember Shammi Kapoor by. It is a perfect creation of Hasrat Jaipuri, Shankar Jaikishan and God of Songs Mohammad Rafi.
