Course Description: This course surveys Jewish collective memory from ancient Israel to the modern State of Israel. The focus of this course will be on the ways in which collective memories have shaped Jewish historiography and identity from antiquity to modernity. More specifically, this vast temporal survey will be structured around the following themes in Jewish memory: destruction and restoration, and exile and return. With a focus on transgenerational sites of memory, students will become familiar with the role of liturgical time and ritual in exploring the relationship between the Jewish holiday cycle and Jewish memory. This course also will consider the sacralization of memorial space by highlighting the relationship between violence, memory, place, and religion.
