Renee writes that she needs our insight... I am a Junior High Special Education teacher in WA. This year, I have a student that is hard of hearing/hearing impaired and is refusing to use her ASL interpreter. This is her first year in Junior High (7th grade) and she is very socially aware. She does not want the interpreter in any classes with her, but we have placed the ASL interpreter in her core academic classes per her IEP. (However, the student says she does not look at her or use her.) I am keeping names out of this, as it is confidential. She is not bullied or made fun of that I am aware of, just very self-conscious of her hearing impairment. I would love any insights you may have, as to how I can encourage her to use her interpreter, to help better her education. She is a very bright, talented young lady, and she wants to be a doctor when she gets older. She is even involved in Orchestra and Challenge Math. She is truly a wonderful young lady. I believe part of her resistance is the fitting in piece, which I respect and understand. However, she can only benefit from using her interpreter. Her mother is deaf and speaks limited English so there has not been a lot of parent involvement yet so far this year. 1. If you have any insights for me, as to how to encourage her to use this service, that would be appreciated.
