Renting or leasing a franking machine could be quite unnerving. Please ensure you understand the difference between both the rental and a lease purchase. Simply, a rental is where you a monthly fee directly to the supplier without being entered into a ‘finance agreement’. There is usually a less formal arrangement between the franking machine supplier and the customer and do not require a credit clearance. However, in a lease agreement you do have to enter a formal finance agreement with a third party equipment finance / leasing company, or the finance company owned by the supplier, this would only apply to the larger manufacturers, for example the Neopost and Pitney Bowes. These finance companies are separated from the supplier, Neopost Finance Ltd and Pitney Bowes Finance Ltd. These ‘in house’ finance companies lease rates are usually higher than the specialised finance companies. If you decide to terminate the lease agreement early you would have to pay a settlement figure or roll the balance onto a new agreement. Many of the customers often believe the many is written off when quite easily taking out a new agreement, especially when the customer assumes the finance company and supplier are the same. There are no right or wrong to be doing when deciding whether you would like to lease or rent a franking machine as these options will depend on each individual customer and the size of the franking machine requirement. If you would only like a smaller machine for a short time period, rental would be best but if you require a higher volume machine a lease would be needed. Also, many customers often think renting or leasing a franking machine it would be including the service and extras. On a small franking machine the service and machine replacement could be included. The extras such as the ink, software updates and recrediting charges and logos is where the suppliers make most of their money on low volume machines. If you decide the lease agreement is right for you look for ‘ADMIN FEE’, this is now between £75 and £150 on top of the first rental payment. Mailcoms do not charge this fee. Most finance companies may apply a ‘Service fee’ hidden within the terms and conditions pages at arounf £40 per annum.
