René Vierne, younger brother of the better-known - TopicsExpress

René Vierne, younger brother of the better-known organist-composer Louis Vierne, was organist at Notre-Dame-des-Champs in Paris from 1904 to 1914. An army reservist, he was mobilized in August 1914 and served on the western front until being killed in action near Verdun in May 1918. His Canzona was composed shortly before the war. I had originally intended to accompany it with pre-war postcards of Paris, but then found these pictures of reservists being mobilized in August 1914. James Garratt made this recording on the organ of St Anns church, Manchester, at a recital on 11 November 2014. youtu.be/on8e1YS-zZk
