Rep. MaryLynn Magar and Democratic challenger Mary Wescott Higgins - TopicsExpress

Rep. MaryLynn Magar and Democratic challenger Mary Wescott Higgins will face off in the Nov. 4 election for state House District 82 to represent parts of Martin County. This is Magars first challenge since she was elected in 2012. In the last two years she got three bills through the Legislature, including one to expand manufacturing tax exemption. The Tequesta Republican is the vice president of a medical diagnostic service company. Higgins is a case worker from Port Salerno whos running for office for the first time. Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers asked them what bills they would introduce in the 2015 legislative session. Here are their answers: Higgins: I would want to at least see a bill on exercising the part of the U.S. Sugar Corp. land purchase option that expires in October, 2015 (This was conceived during former Gov. Charlie Crists tenure to alleviate Lake Okeechobee discharges but most of the purchase fell through after the economic recession). Making a public investment in creating a flow way to send the water south is the most important thing we can do to preserve our environment. We also need to find a way to reduce the huge number of uninsured Floridians, especially the working poor. Medicaid expansion is both the right thing to do and the smart thing. It will create many thousands of jobs and it will return our own tax dollars to Florida to support our hospitals and medical service providers.
