Rep. Michael Grimm (R-Staten Island) said he fears the Common Core - TopicsExpress

Rep. Michael Grimm (R-Staten Island) said he fears the Common Core standards have become a case of one-size fits all. And one-size fits all does not work. He said he believes the state and local school districts should have more control over implementing Common Core curriculum. Maybe the federal government needs to stick to funding, not policy, when it comes to standards, he suggested. But State Senator Diane Savino (D-North Shore) said the state signed on when it accepted the $750 million in federal funds through the Race to the Top initiative. We agreed to accept the standards when we accepted the money, and now we have to deal with the problems involving Common Core, she said. FEEDBACK HELPFUL Assemblyman Michael Cusick (D-Mid-Island), told parents he found the forum and comments helpful. We truly are not experts on all we have to deal with, and that is why we all come to these meetings. We need you to help us represent you, he said.
