Repairing broken wings One thing taxidermist come up against with working with birds wild birds they usually come with their own problems one which I have always found a problem is broken wings the next to articles are for two different way to mend two different broken wings. This shows a broken Ulna if both the Ulan and radius is broken I would skin the full wing out and rebuild a full wing. This I will write about in an article in the further, clean away as normal and degrees the inside and out the bones with acetone. I am using an expanding glue to fix the wirer in the ulna, put a bend in the wirer this way you can use a longer wire it fix the wing. I have put the glue on a playing card these are great for mixing, Scraping and shinning. I push the glue down the ulna with an ear bud wetting the wire this reacts with the glue and start it curing. Now the wire is in the ulna you can take your plies and very carefully pinch the wire in the middle on the bend this will straighten the wire. This photo shows the straightened wire from this you can know see why I but a bend in it to get as much wire in the bone as possible. I have put a small amount of tow in-between the ulna and radius as the glue dries. Once the glue starts to foam I then wire the wing as normal but to strengthen I have cable tied the wirer to the radius. Bind the humorous to the wire you can see the bone has been cut down at the point explained in my book. Tow is bound to the humorous and preserving paste is painted on the wing. This method will give you the movement the wing has but always remember when you are bending and placing the wing that is has been broken and what you have done to the wing. What’s on the work bench broken wings 2 Broken wings in birds will always be a problem for taxidermist this article repairs a broken wing which has the humorous broken off at the base. Clean the wing as normal and remove the broken humorous leave a small amount at the base so not to detach the ulna and radius. You now have to rebuild the full humorous so be careful and measure the one on the other wing if this is also broken piece together the bits is humorous and take that measurement not forgetting to remove the bladed part of the bone . Take a small drill bit and carefully drill a hole in the base of the ulna. Once you have made the hole clean out as much liquid out of the bone as possible. A wire is bent the length of the humours and then at right angles and cut this to 2/3 of the length of the ulna The wire fitted to the wing you can glue this but if you leave it lose it will give you more movement. Now wire the wing as normal but as before I have cable tied the wire to the radius and on to the wire that would have been the humorous. Bind the wirer that would have been the humorous with tow fill in-between the ulna and radius. This will give you good movement when bending and placing the wing but remember what you have done inside.
