Repeat topic...new data......Eggs!! This is a very interesting study showing that eating eggs in combination with a moderately low carb diet in overweight individuals actually LOWERED inflammation in the arteries. Remember that lower inflammation in the arteries means LOWER risk of heart attack. This study took two groups of patients. Each group was asked to eat a moderately low carbohydrate diet. In addition to that diet, one group was given 3 WHOLE eggs daily and the other group was given an egg substitute. Total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff) DID NOT CHANGE in EITHER group. Both groups lost weight and waist. The group that consumed the eggs had a drop in two blood markers of inflammation called serum amyloid A and TNF alpha (tumor necrosis factor alpha). By different mechanisms, both of these markers of inflammation are linked to higher rates of heart disease. Lowering these markers of inflammation lowers risk of vascular events. Also of note is that a prior study by the same group showed an improvement in two other markers of inflammation called C reactive protein and adiponectin. What in eggs might be associated with reduced inflammation? Egg yolk is a source of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin which are antioxidants with antiinflammatory properties that may have contributed to the improvement seen in this study. Vitamin A is also a carotenoid. Interestingly, a study where thin people were given 4 eggs per day showed an INCREASE in some of the markers of inflammation.........so the benefit may only be in overweight patients. What about all of the cholesterol???? Again.....no change was seen in cholesterol values. Why??? Because 90% of the cholesterol we absorb every day comes from bile (made by our liver)......NOT FROM DIET. It is much easier for the body to reabsorb the cholesterol from bile than it is to absorb dietary cholesterol. My recommendation: This stuff is interesting and is certainly contrary to what weve thought. If youre overweight and looking to lose.......get rid of the cereal......yes even that high fiber cereal has high fructose corn syrup........and replace it with a few eggs and some fruit.
