Repeaters pull down June 13 NLE results in WV BY: MONTESA GRINO-CAOYONAN Repeaters of the June 13 Nurse Licensure Examination (NLE)pulled down the results in Western Visayas, study shown by the Commission on Higher Education 6 (CHED-6). CHED-6 education program specialist Dr. Rex Casiple said the region produced 951 passers out of 2,430 takers, or 39.14 percent passing percentage. Of the said takers, 1,766 were repeaters while 664 were first takers. Repeaters passing percentage was only 28 percent while the first takers passing percentage was 70 percent. “This was lower than the national passing percentage and much lower than the December 2012 regional passing percentage of 46.72 percent”, he said. Casiple also said the low performance of the region (below the national passing average) is the result of the overwhelming number of repeaters compared to the first takers. He stressed seven out of 10 examinees from the region were repeaters. “This growing number of repeaters compare to the first takers was the result of the 73 percent drop in nursing enrolment in the last three years”, he said. Casiple noted that the nursing enrolment in the region in the last three years has been decreasing annually by 35 percent or from 16,653 in 2010 to 4,497 in 2013. “If these phenomena continue in the next three years, if no interventions to be made, then we will expect no significant improvement in the NLE performances in this period of time” he said. Casiple also revealed that only nine out of 24 nursing schools performed high; or with a passing percentage higher than that of the national. In national, there were 16,219 examinees passed the 2013 NLE conducted by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) out of 37,887 examinees last June. Basing from the results published in the PRC website majority, or 52 percent of the examinees were repeaters. The repeaters passing percentage was 20.76 percent while the first takers passing percentage was 66.88 percent. Only two schools from the region were included in the top 20 high performing schools nationwide –one is the St. Paul University-Iloilo and West Visayas State University in Iloilo City that topped in the national level with 100 percent passing percentage. Basing from the results published in the PRC website majority, or 52 percent of the examinees were repeaters. The repeaters passing percentage was 20.76 percent while the first takers passing percentage was 66.88 percent. Every year, the nursing enrolment increases due to its higher demand in abroad. Casiple said with this phenomenon of sudden increase in the nursing enrolment in the last decade, the quality of nursing education in the country suffered. To avert this, the CHED issued a Memorandum on April 25, 2012 to strictly implement the provisions of Policies and Standards for Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program. Non-compliance of schools to the said memorandum will lead to closure, through phase-out, of their nursing programs. Casiple also said the official results of the NLE issued by the Board of Nursing of the PRC shall be the basis in the phasing-out of nursing programs. With this move of CHED and the continuing dropped in nursing enrolment, a total of 218 out of 491 nursing schools/programs nationwide have voluntarily/involuntarily discontinued or closed down their operation. In fact, Casiple said six schools in the region had voluntarily closed/phased-out their nursing program in the past years. (IMT)
