Repost from Brother Alfoto - God is One, not Three Since the Old Testament times the Bible has clearly taught that God is only one and not two, three, or more. This is what Moses affirmed when he said, Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is One (Deut. 6:4). Some people understand the oneness of God to mean singularity in essence but plurality in person. In other words, they believe that God is not simply one but two-in-one or three-in-one. The Bible, however, never identified God in terms of Greek notions of multiple persons in one essence. It did not refer to God as one WHAT in three WHOs. Instead, it referred to God as a single person - one WHO. This can be confirmed in thousands upon thousands of verses where singular personal pronouns such as I, me, he, him, and matching singular verbs and adjectives are used when referring to God. There are a few verses that seem to apply plural pronouns (e.g. us) to God but a thorough study of them reveals not a multi personal being but a condescending God relating to His heavenly hosts. But whenever God asserts and emphasizes His identity, He would always use singular personal pronouns. Confessions of a single person God Himself said, there is no God besides Me (Isaiah 44:6). Who is like Me? (verse 7) Is there any God besides Me, or is there any other Rock? I know of none. (verse 8 ) Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, and the one who formed you from the womb, I, the LORD, am the maker of all things, stretching out the heavens by Myself and spreading out the earth all alone (Isaiah 44:24). I am the LORD, and there is no other; Besides Me there is no God, I will gird you, though you have not known Me; That men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun that there is no one besides Me. I am the LORD, and there is no other (Isaiah 45:5-6). For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens (He is the God who formed the earth and made it, He established it and did not create it a waste place, but formed it to be inhabited), I am the LORD, and there is none else (Isaiah 45:18). I, and I alone, am God; no other God is real. - Deuteronomy 32:39 It is clear in the preceding verses that God is not a group of persons who spoke in unison saying We alone are God. There is no God besides us. God spoke of Himself as a single person. According to this single person Himself, there is no other God besides Him! Affirmation of Jesus That God is a single person and not a plurality of persons was also affirmed by Jesus when he said that the most important of all commandments is this: Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one. And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. and subsequently blessed the scribe who responded that indeed there is one God, and there is no other but He. (cf. Mark 12:28ff) Jesus blessed the scribe for saying there is one God, and there is no other but He, not for saying there is one God, and there is no other but THEM. Apostles confirmation The Apostles echoed the teaching of God and of Christ that God is only one and that He is just a single person. But if anyone loves God, this one is known by Him. Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one. (1 Cor. 8:3-4) there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. (I Timothy 2:5) Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. (Rom. 3:29-30) Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? You believe that there is one God. You do well. (James 2:5,19).
