Reps Reject Attempt To Change Nigeria’s Motto A majority of members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday rejected an attempt to change Nigeria’s motto from “Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress” to “Justice and Equity, Peace and progress.” The failed change was contained in a bill titled “a bill for an act to alter the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) by changing the motto of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from “Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress” to “Justice and Equity, Peace and Progress” which was sponsored by Hon Chris Azubogu (APGA, Anambra). According to Azubogu, the change was intended to create a strong political will in leaders to enable them to focus on attaining political objectives in Nigeria. But right from the introduction of the bill by the deputy speaker, Hon Emeka Ihedioha, who presided over Wednesday’s plenary, to the debate on it, members were opposed to the bill, forcing the lawmaker to withdraw it before the question was put on it. According to Azubogu, justice and equity in Nigeria’s motto will impress upon leaders to remember to enshrine the two principles in discharge of their duties. His position was supported by Hon. Matthew Omegara (APGA, Imo), Linus Okorie (PDP, Ebonyi), and Hon. Sadik Asema (PDP, Kogi) while Hon. Chris Eta (PDP, Cross River) and Hon. Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje opposed it.
