Republic of Botswana – Office of the President 15/8/13 From: Dr. Jeff Ramsay, DPS for Government Communications Please find below - MR. KHUMALO “INDICATED HIS WISH TO BE RETURNED TO HIS COUNTRY OF ORIGIN” - BATSHU [Response by the Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, the Honourable Edwin Batshu, to Question No. 1020 asked on Thursday 15th August, 2013 by the Honourable W.B. Mmolotsi, MP. Francistown South, with respect to the deportation of Mr. Alfred Khumalo] QUESTION: To ask the Minister of Labour and Home Affairs to explain:- (i) the circumstances surrounding Mr. Alfred Khumalo’s deportation; (ii) why it took so long for the Department of Immigration and citizenship to give him citizen ship after his application; and (iii) where exactly he is deported to after staying in Botswana for 70 years ANSWER Madam Speaker, the Immigration Office in Selibe Phikwe received a call on the 30th July 2013 from a Social Worker at Selibe Phikwe hospital. The Social Worker reported a patient who had been admitted in the hospital since 23 July 2013 and discharged on 29 July 2013. The Social Worker’s concern was that the patient remained admitted in hospital as he did not have a place to go and that he did not have identity documents. Madam Speaker, immigration officers went to the hospital to respond to the call and they met an old man whom they interviewed. He identified himself as Alfred Khumalo from Kezi in Zimbabwe. Subject identified some Batswana citizens in Selebi Phikwe as his relatives, but it turned out they were acquaintances and had no relationship with him. His case was investigated by immigration officers and it was confirmed that he was a citizen of Zimbabwe. He had a clear mind of his birth place and lineage. He had no means of support and was sleeping rough and living hard. He also indicated his wish to be returned to his country of origin. He was then facilitated to return to Zimbabwe and was handed to Zimbabwe Immigration authorities at Plumtree on the 12 August 2013 to facilitate his travel to his home village. Madam Speaker, there are no records of Mr. Alfred Khumalo’s application for citizenship at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Madam Speaker, Mr. Alfred Khumalo has been deported to Zimbabwe. We do not have any record of his alleged 70 years stay in Botswana. I thank you Madam Speaker.
