Researchers at Harvard Medical School reported a link between low vitamin D levels and the severity of asthma in children. They studied 616 children with asthma aged 6 to 14 who lived in Costa Rica. Lung function and markers for asthma were measured along with their vitamin D blood levels. They found that 28% of the children had insufficient vitamin D levels of less than 30 ng/ml. Lower vitamin D levels were associated with increased allergy markers and risk of being hospitalized for any cause or using anti-inflammatory medications during the previous year. The researchers noted that this study suggests that there may be added health benefits for those who take vitamin D supplementation. This is even more concerning when you consider that this study was done in Costa Rica where these children are exposed to more sun and that almost a third still had very low vitamin D levels.
