Researchers at Monash University in Australia have unveiled the world’s first bionic eye prototype. It will involve an implanted chip in the brain to interact with the eyepiece to give the user a low-resolution outline of objects. It is geared toward those who are completely blind to give them the independence to get around. In 2008, a goal was set to have a bionic eye prototype by 2020, so many are impressed that the technology has been developed ahead of schedule. Trials are expected to begin in 2014.
