Researchers funded by the NIH have traced the overproduction of androgens (male hormones) that are a hallmark of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to a variant of a protein found in the ovary. The discovery may provide information to develop a test to diagnose the condition, as well as a treatment for it. PCOS affects 5 to 7 percent of women of reproductive age, increasing the risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.
