Resist. Dig in your heels. Avoid the tossing of shit against the wall to see what sticks approach to dog training. We need to get on track asap with these dogs. Prevent (without force or pain, but through management) the rehearsal of unwanted behaviors. Just do it. It may mean changing your routines, habits, spending money, giving up what you had hoped to be able to do. Until a dog stops doing what we dont want them to do, or feeling what we dont want them to feel, theyll just keep getting better at the ones we dont want. We cant act like kids who run from mum to dad until we get the answer that works for us, but will not necessarily work for our dogs. Figure out how to get good at what needs to be done. The dog has to feel safe. We can change how they feel about triggers through counterconditioning. We can teach them exactly what we want them to do instead of the unwanted behavior, using positive reinforcement training methods.
