Resolving questions that have been building since the first classified leaks last week, Edward Snowden revealed himself as the source of internal NSA materials documenting a series of classified surveillance programs. The 29 year old Booze Allen Hamilton employee and former Army private has holed up in a Hong Kong hotel room where he feels a “history of freedom of expression” will protect him from extradition to the United States. Once a systems administrator for the CIA, Snowden released information on an information search and storage program called PRISM which facilitated information sharing between American internet service firms such as Google and the NSA. Also revealed to the Guardian newspaper were a heat map program called Boundless Informat designed to track the origin of intercepted internet traffic, a long running effort to collect cell-phone metadata from Verizon through FISA orders, and the Presidential Directive on cyber security from October, PPD-20, which had previously been classified till 2037.
