Response from the ASC: ASC reference: 1429 Thankyou for your email of Monday 7 July regarding funding for the Pararoos. Your complaint is received, and I note your disappointment in the reduction of funding for the sport of Para Football. The Australian Government is a proud supporter of sport and through the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) works closely to support national sporting organisations and national sporting organisations for people with disability. The dedication and hard work of Para-athletes does not go unnoticed. In 2014/15 the Australian Government will provide around $110 million to national sporting organisations to contribute to Australia’s Winning Edge (AWE) targets. This includes $13.4 million funding for Paralympic sports and athletes. To ensure transparency in the allocation of funding to sports, the ASC and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) provide the opportunity for each sport to present a performance case to enable an assessment of their capabilities to achieve AWE targets. Funding recommendations are then scrutinised by a Winning Edge Assessment Panel. Details of the AWE strategy and investment process are listed at the following website: ausport.gov.au/ais/australias_winning_edge. In relation to high performance funding for the Para Football high performance program, an assessment took place in which Football Federation Australia (FFA) had the opportunity to present their performance case. The AIS, in consultation with the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC), determined that the performance evidence regarding Para Football was unconvincing and not likely to contribute to the targets outlined in Winning Edge. As such the Winning Edge Assessment Panel recommended the withdrawal of funding in 2014/15. Funding amounts provided to sports each year are established, on a case by case basis, through the assessment of the performance cases submitted by the national sports organisations, and through financial modelling that determines the requirements to run a high performance program. This is to ensure that the Australian Government maximises its investment to achieve AWE targets across national sporting organisations with the limited amount of funding available. The ASC and AIS will review the performance cases of all sports, including Para Football, after Rio to determine whether there has been a change in their case for funding. In the interim, if you have any questions regarding the ongoing delivery of Para Football we recommend you contact FFA as the national sporting organisation responsible for driving the future activities and game development of the sport.
