Response of the Congress of the People on the physical and mental abuse of women and children (girls) in the Eastern Cape at the plenary session of the Eastern Cape Legislature on the 27 August 2013. By: Hon. Nomfundo JamJam Honourable Speaker and Deputy Speaker Honourable Premier and Members of the Executive Council Honourable Members of the Legislature Kings and Chiefs present here Chairperson of the House of Traditional Leaders Ladies and Gentlemen Honorable members The scourge of physical and mental abuse of women and children in particular can never be over emphasized. Our communities are at the cutting edge of this inhumane act which can only be understood as barbaric and animalistic. Women and children are human as well and should be understood, accepted and respected as such. Our developmental agenda as a country demands of all of us to accept our societal responsibilities as direct contributors to an overall socio economic development. The struggle against triple oppression and for enjoyment of full rights of all citizens is an integral part of social and economic emancipation. There can be no successful nation which disrespect and undermine the original rights of all sectors of the society. The success of the National Development Plan and provincial development thinking lies amongst others on the extent to which we respect each other as human being and in particular respecting women and future generations and leaders of the society, our children. The Congress Of The People, commits to join all citizens of the province and the country, to spare no energy and moment in fighting against this barbaric phenomenon. We note and appreciate the undivided and unparalleled commitment of the Department of Social Development under the stewardship of its MEC, in fighting against this abnormality. We agree with the MEC that, our judicial system in its totality must be seen to be consistent with the transformational agenda of our country which puts the historically disadvantaged social groups at the centre. Part of our support to the amended bill on DNA seeks to address this matter. As Oliver Tambo said, "we can never rest until the our liberties are realized to the fullest". The continued physical and mental abuse of women and children is a counter to our national vision which accurately depicts the kind of society we seek to create. This we can not tolerate irregardless of the political, social and economic background from which we come from. This barbaric situation undermines the pre scripts of the Freedom Chatter, our unifying guide. The success of the National Democratic Revolution in its attempt to realize the Freedom Chatter shall never be realized until we all unite against the scourge of women and children physical and mental, emotional abuse. The Congress of the People joins all citizens in a fight against this barbarism. Thank you
