Restaurants in private housing areas in Kuwait are required to close by midnight as per orders of Maj Gen Abdulfattah Al-Ali, the Assistant Undersecretary for General Security at the Interior Ministry. This includes fast food branches and restaurants located at cooperative societies, Al-Rai daily reported yesterday. The Interior Ministry said that the decision is taken for security reasons, mainly to prevent late night gatherings of young people at restaurants, and also to stop illegal laborers from working there at night. The decision is also supported by a Health Ministry recommendation which indicates that restaurants take the lack of inspections during night hours to their advantage by selling food unsuitable for human consumption.
