Restaurants may find they receive more negative reviews from customers when the weather is bad, a study has discovered. Researchers at Georgia Tech University and Yahoo Labs collected and analysed 1.1 million online reviews spanning ten years for 840,000 restaurants in 32,000 cities across the US. They used sites including Foursquare, Citysearch and TripAdvisor to get a broad base of input from as many users as possible. It was found that reviews written on rainy, cold or snowy days, as well as in very hot conditions, tended to be worse than those submitted on nice days. July and August were the worst months for negativity, while November was the best. The most positive reviews came in on sunny days with temperatures between around 21 and 38 degrees C. Co-author Eric Gilbert said: Our findings could help consumers better understand online reviews and ratings and help review sites calibrate recommendations.
