Retirement party for Mamacita Filo was one of the great tributes deservedly paid to one of the greatest legends of CRLS history EVER!!!!! Filo is a woman of enormous compassion and endless generosity. She is the quintessential example of Tough Love and a testimony of its redeeming power-- most especially when the LOVE is stronger than the TOUGHNESS. It was always thus with Dean Filo. So often the toughest and meanest, the most incorrigible student who cursed Dean Filo after she disciplined them would come back months if not years later and bless Filo for having set them straight and saved them from the school to prison pipeline. Probably as many parents as their own students can testify to her healing powers. Two days before Filos last day of school she was taken to hospital to have heart surgery and her original retirement party was postponed! Yesterday the triumphant Filo was in full health and well being. Friends and family, many retired veteran colleagues, came to pay tribute to the grand Mamacita of CRLS. The personal testimonies were all lump in the throat statements of many younger colleagues who were themselves former students and now working colleagues who learned most everything about how to love and understand students the Filo way. Filo is an educator of impeccable integrity. She triumphed professionally with brilliance and great wit. She exhibited all the stamina, tenacity, perseverance, and true grit that has brought her to this glorious evening. We are all surely blessed to have worked in her presence. Baruche Aschem.
