Returned from the burial of my friend very depressed. An Imam - TopicsExpress

Returned from the burial of my friend very depressed. An Imam announced that Women should not come closer to the grave and the daughters and wife cannot even spread the dust on the grave. Same old story, same old discrimination. For almost three months, when Kareem Khan was in hospital, his wife and two daughters were at his bed side every minute. The Imam did not even go to offer prayers and now he had the audacity to say that women cannot come close to the grave of their father or husband. This is not sharia. This is discrimination against women. This is like treating them as second class citizens. This is denying them the rights that Allah has given them. I took an issue with the Imam and made the issue known to everyone. 80 percent of the people, men and women, came afterwards saying that women have every right to participate in the burial rituals and the family has a right to spread the dust on the grave. Please speak up. These religious leaders are occupying our sacred places and they should be thrown out of such places for discriminating against women and misquoting the Prophet and Allah. They are a curse on Islam. Even if I am a voice in minority, I cannot accept this second class citizen status for my mothers, sisters, and daughters. I will speak up. I will not allow the sharia to be exploited. They are institutionalizing inequality in the name of Allah. Please speak up. Please take a stand. Resolve this issue and many others that mistreat women in our culture.
