Rev. John C. Welch was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and attended Carnegie-Mellon University where he received a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering & Economics. Soon thereafter Rev. Welch began a productive career in computer technology and management systems working for a number of corporations such as IBM, Grubb & Ellis, and Deloitte & Touche. During his corporate life, he received a number of recognitions and certificates for his outstanding work in the information technology profession. Rev. Welch, a graduate of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary where he received a Masters of Divinity degree, is currently pursuing a PhD in Healthcare Ethics at Duquesne University. He was licensed in the ministry in 1990 and was ordained in 1995 to serve as Assistant Pastor of the Baptist Temple Church. From 1999 – 2006 Rev. Welch served as pastor of the Bidwell United Presbyterian Church. In January 2007 Rev. Welch became Vice President for Student Services and Dean of Students of the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and is an adjunct professor of Business Ethics at the University of Pittsburgh’s Katz School of Business. Rev. Welch is active in the community and sits on various boards and advisory committees. He served on the Community Research Advisory Board of the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Minority Health (CRAB), the Board of Directors of the Rankin Christian Center, co-chaired the Religious Affairs Committee of the Pittsburgh NAACP for 2-years and was Chairperson for the Advisory Board of Centers for Healthy Hearts and Souls. He was one of 5 members appointed to the re-emerged City of Pittsburgh’s Ethics Hearing Board in 2006 and served until 2012. He also served as President of the Pittsburgh Interfaith Impact Network for 5-years (an affiliate of the Gamaliel Foundation and a coalition of over 50 churches, mosques, temples, synagogues, meeting houses and other faith-based special interest groups and institutions, working to promote regional equity and social justice in the Greater Pittsburgh area and surrounding region.) Currently, Rev. Welch is a member on the Advisory Board of the Metro-Urban Institute of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, is Chair of the Gamaliel African-American Leadership Commission (a national body of clergy and lay leaders), and a member of the Board of Directors of the Gamaliel Foundation of Chicago, Illinois, and has been the Chief Chaplain for the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Police since 2008. Rev. Welch has been recognized by Church Women United, Inc. with their Human Rights Award in 2007, the NAACP as Pastor of the Year in 2007, the YWCA as a 2010 recipient of their Racial Justice Award, a finalist for the City of Pittsburgh DiverCity360 Living Legend Honors in 2011, and the Gamaliel Foundation with their 25th Anniversary Legacy Leader Award. Rev. Welch is blessed to have a loving and supportive wife Reverend B. DeNeice Welch, four anointed and musically gifted children, and two lovely granddaughters.
