Revenge is permissible, ...but it is better to forgive! The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, When two people abuse each other; the beginner will be the sinner as long as the oppressed does not transgress the limits. [Saheeh Muslim] This Hadeeth tells us that if Muslim A abuses Muslim B, and says unfair things about him; and in return Muslim B also abuses Muslim A, and says unfair things to the SAME EXTENT; - then the entire burden of the sin of abusing would be upon Muslim A, who started the quarrel. But... if Muslim B, who is wronged, EXCEEDS the limits in revenge, then MUSLIM B will also be guilty to the degree of his excess. ...thus, although revenge is permissible in Islam, it is better to forgive; because usually when one is abused, he gets aggressive and exceeds the limits. ...So patience is the best choice here! Allah says, Verily, whosoever shows patience and forgives; that would truly be from the things recommended by Allah. [Soorah ash-Shura (42): 43] ...meaning, whoever bears the insult with patience and conceals that evil action; there will be a great reward for him with Allah. May Allah help us remember this when anger overtakes our ability to think wisely, and give us the strength to patiently forgive those who cross their limits... Ameen!
