Reverse osmosis unit for Kayangel arrives MONDAY, 06 JANUARY 2014 A reverse osmosis unit will be transported to Kayangel on Wednesday through the assistance of the US Embassy-Koror and the Army Civic Action Team 06-01. The U.S. Embassy yesterday disclosed that the reverse osmosis unit arrived here on December 25. The reverse osmosis unit is being provided by the US Defense Department. This assistance from the US was a result of the request by State Min. Billy Kuartei to US Embassy-Koror. Kuartei wrote Charge d’ Affaires Thomas Daley earlier requesting the US Embassy’s assistance in providing/supplying water desalination system with a standalone generation to Kayangel State. The US Defense Department granted Palau’s request by lending a reverse osmosis unit for use in Kayangel until such time it is not needed and then returned. Earlier reports showed that after Super Typhoon Haiyan devastated Kayangel, the Environmental Quality Protection Board conducted assessment on the quality of water available in the state and it was found that the groundwater was inundated by the storm surges caused by the super typhoon. EQPB assessment showed saltwater and other debris contaminate the water in Kayangel and therefore it is not fit for consumption and use as it contains 90 percent saltwater and 10 percent fresh water. The water system storage tanks and school rain catchments reportedly indicate presence also of coliform and E.Coli. The use of reverse osmosis unit is anticipated to provide adequate potable water supply for Kayangel State residents who are currently reliant on external supplies of water. As of yesterday, the Civic Action Team was doing series of tests of the reverse osmosis unit. According to US Embassy, operation of the reverse osmosis unit will be handled by CAT. IT
