Review by John Bottle in the Bury Free Press (on our performance in Bury St. Edmunds): What a performance! You need to know that I’m not a fan of Jane Austen and, to be honest, opera and classical-style singing often leave me rather cold – but when you put them in a blender and whizz in the kind of talent in the Chamber Opera Chicago you come out with 100% entertainment. Pure class. There were flashes of humour, plenty of over-acting and some great dancing (the two Irish dancing lads were definitely scene-stealers, and rightly so), all held together by a multi-talented group of musicians in the small but perfect orchestra. Apart from the leading characters, the surprise was that, in amongst the ensemble numbers there were some stunning voices with real quality – anybody who went along thinking they were going to hear a bunch of amateurs (as I did!) was in for a real shock. I’ve not even mentioned the costumes, the choreography, the clever scene changes - mainly with very well done projections onto translucent curtains – and the cast of over 30 all playing their roles to perfection. In case you haven’t yet got the message – I was totally blown away by one of the best evening’s entertainment I’ve had at the beautifully restored Regency Theatre Royal which, incidentally, was SUCH a fitting venue for this story – written right in the middle of the Regency era.
