Review of Fukrey – Fukrey is one of the films that expose the fact that we are an audience that has been tamp down by nonsensical films to such end that we have lost an eye for quality. The devil as they say lies in the details, and this film is replete with instance of directorial brilliance. There are these ‘wink and you miss’ scenes, that concoct a sequence of several minutes in one’s mind in explaining the background of the characters. The three leading protagonists are natural in parts and sublime otherwise. Every tiny part including those played by the women, the panditji and the owner of Kirtan Company are played coherently and in synch with the rest of the film. The film avoids the popular Bollywood trap of glossing over real world issues, and in one of the scenes, has a protagonist extracting a urine sample from his paralytic father, without asking the audience to laugh at him for the act. There are other instances where the weakness of each character involved is exposed and their fallibility laid bare. The songs have been subtly merged in the background and thus ceased to provide multiple loo breaks. In essence ‘Fukrey’, is a film set in the real world, with real world characters, real world aspirations and real problems. When a director with a bunch of young new faces, and a non-concocted plot, can maintain the smile on your face for two whole hours, without resorting to SMS jokes or cheap innuendoes, it calls for a loud round of applause. 5 Stars
