Review of Guardians of the Galaxy (NO SPOILERS!)... first, for those with younger children, its LONG! I looked at my phone at 6:20 when the movie started and the credits ran out with that final scene (stay till the credits are completely over) at 8:09. So its almost a full two hours NOT counting the 40 minutes of previews and advertisements that started at 5:40-ish. There IS some language too, no F bombs but words like Asshole and shit, just as a point of reference. If I was a movie critic, which I am TOTALLY not (I almost never agree with them), I would give this movie 4 out of 5 stars. Its well written. The one-liners will kill you laughing, but the kids are going to be out of the loop because the references to the music and the music itself (all 70s and 80s) are obscure in some cases but really add something if you get it. The acting was... hard to describe. Main character Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt who has done nothing else notable other than the voice of the main character in the Lego Movie) was awesome. Hes good looking (hes not Chris Hemsworth but hes hot) and does a really good job. Zoe Saldana did nothing for me. Her character was kind of cool, but her look and acting were average. I didnt find her attractive (Im aware Im not a guy, but I still have opinions about that) as the love interest and think her character needs to grow. A LOT. Bradley Cooper plays an genetically mutated Racoon named Rocket. That was a waste of talent (I love Brad, but this wasnt him). ANYONE with a character voice could have played the part. There was no real acting involved (its a machine or computer-generated) so the only thing that made Rocket cool was WHAT he said, not really anything he did. Same with Vin Diesel, who played Groot, a big animated tree. Again, ANYONE could have played that part--he only says 5 different words the whole movie and theres no body or anything that says its Vin. Dont get me wrong, these characters were integral to the story and the overall story was AMAZING. Its just that putting top name actors in roles that didnt depict them was a shame. There is NO DOUBT that Tom Hanks is Woody in Toy Story. Hes a known factor, hes got a recognizable voice and HE brings the character alive. This is not the case with Brad and Vin. Overall, the story, the writing, the essence of the characters are wonderful. We will buy it on video and watch it again. We will go to the next one. You will laugh, cry, laugh some more and cheer. The action scenes rock, and again, the writing is so amazing. You see Glenn Close, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin who add a little magic but while its a solid four stars, I just cant give it the five I gave to the Avengers, Iron Man or Thor. Just my thoughts for anyone whos planning to go. I liked it, the kids liked it, and the Kevin Bacon references are epic. ENJOY!
